Re #3, there might be other customers in the shop, or wanting to get in. Jewelry store clerks are supposed to keep an eye on the customers when items are out of the case for a closer view. I suspect that if I, a pudgy middle-aged white man, had tried the same thing, I wouldn't have made it to the door. But it's hard to find clerks who will tackle a 6'2 black man for near minimum wage...
