Well, she's an MIT student, so she shouldn't be too dumb. However, wearing a fake bomb to an airport makes you wonder if she was trying for a Darwin award.

5 small lights on a piece of plastic with a battery do not constitute a "fake bomb". Neither does playing with play-do while picking up your boyfriend.
She's being persecuted because it was home made and the security officers are ignorant. Last I checked, it was still legal to build circuits by yourself -- even using them to decorate your clothing. Is there some sort of uniform law regarding airport visits I don't know about?
